Microsoft confident of escaping Russian monopoly probe

The chief executive of Microsoft's Russian arm is confident the company will emerge unscathed from the country's anti-monopoly probe.

Russian watchdogs are investigating Microsoft's cutbacks in supplies of Windows XP to the country, claiming the action could violate its monopoly laws.

Microsoft has confirmed that it is in communications with the watchdog, but claims to be confident it can deal with the issues raised.

"We received documents containing some questions we are answering now. I think that will remove some of the issues without any problems," says Microsoft's Russian chief executive Nikolai Pryanishnikov.

"Further, if there is dialogue and some solutions are required, we will cooperate and meet all demands, and continue to work in Russia for the good of consumers."

The agency will consider the case on 24 July.
